The city of Thunder Bay was formed with the joining of the twin cities of Fort William and Port Arthur. Thus why this attraction has such historical value to the area. Old Fort William is one of the largest living-history sites in North America. And if you’re fortunate to be visiting Thunder Bay, you need to make this a must-see on your vacation itinerary.
Old Fort William is a re-creation of an early 1800s fur-trading fort that was active from 1803 to 1821. The 25-acre site has 42 historical buildings staffed with numerous costumed staff. You can see trademens shops, a farm, apothecary, fur stores, warehouses, the Great Hall, voyageur encampment, indigenous encampment and more!
If you’re hungry, take time to eat in the historic restaurant and buy a souvenir from the gift shop on site. Old Fort William is located at 1 King Road, off of Highway 61 South. It is open for the season from the middle of May until the middle of October on a daily basis.
