Often referred to as the Niagara of the north, Kakabeka Falls are worth the 20 mile visit west of Thunder Bay. Appropriately, the word “Kakabeka” means “water running over sheer cliffs”. Indeed, water thunders over sheer cliffs into an impressive gorge before flowing to Lake Superior.
The falls are magnificent and powerful, as water gushes over a 131-foot steep wall of a canyon. Their display creates a thundering sound! You can enjoy the view from various vantages along the boardwalk and observation pods. Swimming, camping, picnicking and hiking are all nearby.
A hiking trail exists whereby you can retrace the steps made by voyageurs on the fur trade route from Montreal to the West. The flow of water is best in spring and on weekends – the flow is reduced during the week.
